Some might say at the drop of a hat. A party brings out the best in national identity – a broad genuine Thai smile. So should we be surprised that Thailand is a favoured venue to celebrate New Yearω
This is the land of smiles and “sanook”. Whether the countdown is in Bangkok, Phuket or a far northern destination, the celebrations will carry the hallmarks of fun and genuine hospitality that make the country such a rewarding destination to visit.Of course, Bangkok has a mission to fulfill. It aspires to make its 2008 New Year Countdown a mega-celebration, on par with the biggest and brightest in Asia Pacific. The spotlight is on the “Hands Bangkok Countdown”, where more than 200,000 New Year party goers will mingle in the downtown CentralWorld Square. Festivities begin 21 December and culminate in the countdown on New Year’s Eve extending through New Year’s Day.Concerts and live on-stage performances, the informal atmosphere of beer gardens and light and sound shows support a theme of peace and joining hands across a multitude of cultures and races.
According to the organisers, joining hands will bring people together -- lovers, friends and families -- to celebrate the hopes and destiny of a New Year.A gigantic screen will allow party goers to view the countdown celebrations in countries in the same time zone, while a giant 21 metre-high Greeting Ball Tower, with a three-metre diameter LCD orb-screen will create bursts of stunning display of light, colour, sound and movement at minute intervals over the party scene, until the countdown begins and the fireworks light up the sky. There are two other official locations for New Year celebrations. The National Stadium, just 2 km from CentralWorld Square on the city’s Skytrain route, will be packed to capacity as residents and tourists enjoy an evening of musical concerts and variety show performances organised by GMM Grammy Records and Channel 9. TV stars will turn out to entertain the crowd, while a huge screen will show nation-wide countdown celebrations as the minutes tick by.A more traditional Thai celebration will underscore activities at the city’s Sanam Luang, with the famed temple roofs and spires in the Grand Palace courtyards providing the backdrop. Crowds will gather on the historic parade ground, facing Thammasat University, to enjoy classical dance performances, folk songs from the various provinces and musical concerts for an older generation of city residents. As the countdown celebrations get underway, firework displays along the banks of the nearby Chao Phraya River will illuminate the sky.New Year celebrations throughout the country will be on a scale never seen before as the nation, in gratitude and happiness, celebrates the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King.

by:http://www.tourismthailand.org

The Sanctuary of Truth

I have mentioned before that Pattaya is not exactly my favourite beachside resort. But, there isn't too much to worry about.

It is quite expensive to enter this place but it is well worth it. You will be richly rewarded. I must have taken nearly three hundred pictures here. There was plenty to look at in every direction you looked. Of secondary interest is the dolphin show. But, I didn't linger to watch. I am not sure how you would get to the Sanctuary of Truth on your own. It is in northern Pattaya at the end of Soi Nakula 12. It is rather out of the way. However, I did see some tourists arrive on the back of a songtaew. So, I guess you can hire one to come out here.

Phru Kradung National Park

Phu kradueng National Park is located at 70 kilometres from Loei province on the Khon Kaen -Loei Highway. It is then quite remarkable then to see people wandering around the kingdom imposing their cultural approach on the situations and events they encounter. Often these leads to confusion, worse, it sometimes leads to ugly scenes that are entirely avoidable with a modicum on insight on how things are done in Thailand. What follows then is a list of Dos and Don’ts for when you are in the kingdom:

The Monarchy

The monarchy is revered by all Thais and people will simply will not tolerate any lack respect towards any members of the royal family – past or present. If you come from a culture like that in the United Kingdom, where royals are often in the news and are sometimes subject to criticism, be especially careful. Criticism of the king and royal family is not just frowned upon in Thailand; it is against the law – a punishable offence that is taken very seriously. As an example to underscore the importance of this issue, in 2002 two journalists from the Far Eastern Economic Review published a short article about the relationship between, Thaksin Shinawatra, the country’s prime minister, and King Bumibol Adulyadej. As a result of the article, the journalists were threatened with expulsion for contravening Thailand’s tough lèse majesté laws.

Religion

Thailand’s national religion is Buddhism (although there are significant numbers of Muslims and a minority group of Christians) and it is very important to be respectful as far as the religion is concerned. Always dress ‘politely’ when entering a temple or religious shrine. As you are on holiday in a hot country, your perspective of polite dress might be coloured by the situation you are in. However, shorts, bikinis, tops that show your bare arms, skirts that show your legs, open-toed sandals and generally dirty or unkempt attire is considered inappropriate. In some of the larger temples like Wat Prakeaw guards will actually forbid you from entering if you are dressed inappropriately, and you may have to hire sarongs and strips of material to cover yourself up before being permitted to enter. At the smaller temples you are own your own – do the right thing!

Buddha Images

Buddha images are sacred, whatever size or condition. Never climb on a Buddha image, and be very careful about taking photos – some images are so sacred photographs are forbidden. Abide by this rule or you may even be asked to leave. If you can’t cross your legs, don’t sit on the floor in front of temple’s Buddha image – in doing so you will point your feet at the Buddha which is an act of sacrilege (see Feet below). The 2004 film ‘Hollywood Buddha’ caused an uproar in Thailand and other Buddhist countries in the region when advertising posters for the film showed a central character sitting on the head of a Buddha image. Their reaction was most un-Thai like. Be warned.

Monks

Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman or accept anything a woman might offer. If a woman wants to give something to a monk it must first be given to a man, or put on a piece of cloth. The monk will then drag the cloth to him before picking the item up. Likewise a monk will not shake a man’s hand – that type of contact is forbidden. Monks travel on public transport and require the same respect there as they would receive at the temple. If a bus or train, etc. is crowded and a monk is likely to come into contact with people, do not hesitate to give the monk your seat. Often special seats are allocated for monks only – don’t sit in them!

Shoes

Do not wear shoes inside a temple where Buddha images are kept. Take your shoes off before entering someone’s home.

Greetings

Thais do not shake hands; they ‘wai’ – a gesture made by placing your hands together in front of your face a bowing a little. Generally, you should not wai to a child and a younger person should wai an older person first. However, these rules are possibly a little more flexible as far as a foreigner is concerned, the Thais you wai will generally very much appreciate you delving into the local custom and practice.

The Head

Whereas in the west a friendly pat on the head, especially the head of someone a bit younger than you, will be regarded as a friendly and supportive gesture, in Thailand any gesture towards the head will cause Thais to recoil and will be greeted with shock and possibly annoyance. Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body – the temple of the body as it were. As such touching someone’s head is entirely unacceptable.

The Feet

Whereas the head is the highest point of the body, the feet are the lowest. Do not point at things with your feet, and do not point the palms of your feet at anyone (see Buddha Images above).

Shouting and Shows of Annoyance

In Thailand shouting and shows of annoyance are entirely frowned upon, whatever the situation. There may be times when you face frustrations, do so quietly a calmly. Shouting and showing annoyance are signs of lack of discipline and in doing either you are in fact showing yourself up. This might lead to the Thai you are talking to trying to help you ‘save face’ by smiling and possibly even laughing to defuse the situation. For westerners in particular, there could probably not be a less appropriate reaction and often it serves to exasperate a situation. The results are often explosive. Rather than deal with the subtle intricacies of this aspect of culture, simply do not get angry – things will work themselves out much better if you can avoid it.

Drugs

Thailand takes drugs very seriously and is trying to eradicate unlawful drugs entirely. Don’t either partake or trade in illegal substances. Clubs and places of entertainment are sometimes raided and people made to put forward urine samples. If you test positive, penalties will be harsh. Trading in drugs will lead to the death penalty or likely decades in prison.

General

Kissing, cuddling and similar behaviour are frowned upon if in public – especially amongst older Thais. Younger Thais are unlikely to be as shocked, but to avoid their possible discomfort, avoid the behaviour.
Thais are generally shy people and few are likely to walk up to you and engage in conversation. If this happens, and the conversation moves towards the purchase of gems, gold, jewellery or other such items, beware. Every year people get caught up in purchases of items at entirely inflated prices that have little or no value because they are told they can sell these items at a profit in their home countries. Remember you are here on holiday – not here to make a fast buck. If something seems too good to be true – it is.

Smoking in the street is illegal – you can be fined 2,000 Baht.

Dropping litter in the street is illegal – the same fine applies.

Do not engage in purchase of wild animals whether protected or not. As with everything there’s a Thai slant to the genre. Check out some of the cabaret shows in places like Pattaya – they will certainly make you open your eyes.
If you are in Thailand for a limited amount of time take in some of Thailand’s better known cabaret shows.

Alcazar Cabaret

Although a visit here is very much dependent on whether this is your cup of tea or not, places like Alcazar Cabaret have become tourist attractions in their own right. At Alcazar it’s a straight forward theme – men dressed as women, or as they are known in the trade, ‘female impersonation artists’. Impersonate them well they do – only careful attention to fine details such as Adam’s Apples expose these artists as being male. Known in Thai as ‘Katoeys’, the performers are almost invariably transsexuals who have had ‘gender reassignment’.

The entertainment provided includes full cabaret performances featuring countless performers wearing some of the most extravagant evening wear you are ever likely to see. And this is no low-key event either. The hall housing Alcazar Cabaret Show seats 1,200 people and employs state-of-the-art light and sound technology. In addition, there are a number of restaurants and cafes to enjoy before and after the shows. To push the envelope further, Alcazar Theatre proudly presents an annual "Greatest Lady-man Pageant in the World" – a full fledged beauty contest for transsexuals.Whatever your thoughts on this type of entertainment, a visit to Alcazar will be an unforgettable experience!

Details: Alcazar Theatre Pattaya, Thailand has shows daily 21:00 onwards

How to get there: As with elsewhere, the Songtaews circling Pattaya are by far the most convenient way to get to Alcazar Theatre.

Tiffany's Show

TIFFANY'S SHOW is the First ever truly transvestite cabaret show in South East Asia. When?
Wherever you travel in the world, it is important to get the timing right. Not knowing about a country’s seasons and possible weather conditions can turn your holiday into a nightmare. Likewise, gathering some basic details about what to expect will help you make the right decisions about where and when to go.
As far as Thailand is concerned, the best time of year for a visit is between November and February. Generally, the weather is cooler during this period and there is certainly less rain than at other times in the year. However, Thailand is a big country with a diverse landscape. There is somewhere to visit whatever time of the year you visit the kingdom.

Thailand’s Seasons
Thailand’s seasons are reasonably uniform through the country, but there are some regional differences. What follows is a summary of the seasons as they impact the kingdom’s various regions:

Central Thailand and the EastIn
central Thailand and the eastern provinces, the really hot summer weather starts around March and goes on to around November. During this time extreme temperatures can go up to the 45 degrees centigrade mark. The winter months are November to February. There may really be only a few days of genuinely cold weather during these months, but the period leading up to the New Year are a welcome respite from the heat throughout the rest of the year. Aside from these days, visitors from Europe still may feel the temperatures as being a bit warm during Thailand’s winter, although not uncomfortably so. The rainy season kicks in around the end of May and goes on until October. The rain is frequent and sometimes fierce. Usually though rainstorms go on for around 30 minutes or so, and after a storm the weather is significantly cooler.

Northern Thailand and the Northeast
Northern Thailand and the Northeast have the same basic seasons as those in the central and eastern regions. The winters are though significantly cooler. Mountainous regions can get particularly cold, on some occasions down to 0 degrees centigrade. In these parts of Thailand’s winter starts in November and goes on to January. Without doubt these are the best months for a visit to the North and Northeast – flowers are in bloom, it is dry and cool, and in the mountains mists and fogs often form making what is already wonderful scenery exquisite.

Southern Thailand
Southern Thailand’s seasons are less distinct and really there are only two proper seasons - summer and the rainy season. The Gulf of Thailand lies to the east of the Thai peninsula while the Andaman Sea lies to the west. Visiting areas west of the peninsula (Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi) is best done between November and April to avoid the monsoons that occur during other months – monsoons obviously make visiting islands by boat difficult and sometimes dangerous. Clearly they are best to be avoided. Areas east of the peninsula (Koh Samui, Hat Yai) are best visited between May and October. If you are planning to visit both sides of the coast during your stay in Thailand, March to April would be the best months.

Guide to Thailand 's Beach and Seaside

There are many islands, beachs and seasides in Thailand , covering on area in the east and south region of Thailand. the east region and the east of south region is on the Gulf of Thailand side but the west of south region is on Andaman sea side where is more beautiful. If you wish to get fresh air and would like to escape from being chaotic and severity of city life, travelling to island or beach will be rewarding.

Thailand Travel to Beach and Seaside
For Gulf of Thailand side, there are seaside starting from Trad province in the Eastern region to end at Narathiwat province in the Southern region. It is a widely used form of urban transport in Bangkok and other Thai cities, as well as other major Southeast Asian and South Asian cities. It is particularly popular where traffic congestion is a major problem, such as in Bangkok. tuk-tuks were introduced in Brighton, England on 10th July 2006, where a fleet of twelve (spelt TucTuc) operate using compressed natural gas, as the first motorised rickshaw service in Europe, between Brighton Marina and Hove, via Brighton railway station.

The tuk-tuks may have a sheet metal body (painted mild steel) or open frame with canvas roof and drop-down sides. Some have ornate tin ornamental hammerings or carvings for decoration. The roof may be either mild steel or a water-proofed canvas, riveted to round tubing. Water-proof removable sides can be added in the rainy season. Resting on three small wheels (one in front, two on the rear), there is a small cabin for the driver in the front and seating for three in relative comfort in the rear. They are very maneuverable and can turn around in one lane of traffic with room to spare.

Tuk-tuks are generally fitted with a water-cooled two-stoke engine.. They have handlebar controls instead of a steering wheel, making them a tricycle. The tuk-tuks is named after the sound its two-stroke engine makes when it is idling. It may have been derived from a similar Japanese automobile Daihatsu Midget in the 1950s (later Bajaj of Indonesia), although tuk-tuks of the type used in Brighton, England evolved from the Vespa scooter (later Bajaj of India), using old Piaggio Vespa pattern tooling and a Piaggio-derived 175cc engine. These were the front half of a Vespa, with an axle created for the rear, badged (in Vespa-style) as the Ape. These were used with truck bodies, , pick-up bodies and eventually taxi bodies. Later the legshields were extended all the way up and over to create a roof. They generally are low geared, to allow the small engine to move comparatively large loads. Given the low gearing, tuk-tuks have a high torque-to-weight ratio and can accelerate quite quickly making them nimble, especially in heavy traffic. The lack of high speed capability is irrelevant in heavy urban traffic.

Tuk-tuks drivers may have migrated from the provinces and have a reputation for not knowing the city in which they work very well, therefore getting people lost. Tuk-tuks do not have meters and users generally bargain with the driver for a price to take them to a specified destination. In Bangkok, there is now a maximum fee which drivers may not exceed. This has tended to become the default fee for foreigners. As with all unmetered transport, not agreeing to a fee before departure can risk unethical practice by the driver.

Guide to Thailand 's Islands

There are many islands, beachs and seasides in Thailand , covering on area in the east and south region of Thailand. the east region and the east of south region is on the Gulf of Thailand side but the west of south region is on Andaman sea side where is more beautiful. If you wish to get fresh air and would like to escape from being chaotic and severity of city life, travelling to island or beach will be rewarding

Thailand Travel to Island
For Gulf of Thailand side, there are seaside starting from Trad province in the Eastern region to end at Narathiwat province in the Southern region. This lintel disappeared for many years outside the country, but was recently returned. The setting of Phanom Rung is quite scenic, with views of the countryside all around. The site is probably the most visited Khmer monument in Thailand. If you want it quieter, be sure to arrive before 10 A.M.

Muang Tam ('low city') is located nearby, and is worth a visit all by itself. The park is opened in 1999 as part of the Khao Nang Phanturat Royal Initiative project for natural resourced conservation when their Majesties the King and the Queen traveled on a helicopter and passed over Khao Chao Lai (Khao Nang Phanturat) and saw the unique geography a huge rock that looked like a woman lying down, the soil was much eroded by rainfall. So their Majesties wished the site to be restored and preserved. With the story from Thai folk tale, the park became a popular study site.

The nature study route features many interesting stops inspired by the story of Phra Sang Thong. The first one is called Phanturat crematory field and Phanturat’s mirror which are a few hundred meters away from the main office. People often come to pay respect to the chedi-like location and ask for a son. Next location is Glass Slippers Field and Phra Sang’s Pond of which the walkway is steeper and narrower. Tourists can sis down in the open field full of golden bamboo leaves. The aerial photography shows the hill that looks like glass slippers. Phra Sang’s Pond is a deep abysse believed to be the place where Phra Sang soaks in gold water to camouflage himself from his stepmother Phanturat. The cliff overlooks the houses of villagers and Cha Am beach. Kho Chang, the next stop, is actually a limestone walking path that looks like the Great Wall in China, Ma Yom Cave is full of stalagmite and exotic plants as well as a giant boa tree. It is a place where bats gather so villagers com and take bats’ waste to sell it in the market.

After walking down from Ma Yom Cave, tourists can enjoy a view of wild life including a hog deer and exotic birds.
The story of Phra Sang Thong plays a major part in bonding the local to this historical heritage. It helps boost up the spirit of conservation so that the place can live and tell its intriguing story to the younger generation.

Khao Nang Phanturat National Park Phetchaburi Province
Local dining places are located not far away from Cha Am. On the way back to the city, you may want to try Ratchaburi/Nakhon Pathom route where you can find a 24-hour local market that offers a variety of local treats with inexpensive price.

Huai Mae Khamin Waterfall

น้ำตกห้วยแม่ขมิ้น ทีลอซู กาญจนบุรี

Huai Mae Khamin Waterfall
Kanchanaburi’s Mighty Thi Law Soo

The 200 kilometer drive from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi province passes through Nakhom Pathom province. From the munici-pality of Kanchanaburi , continue further to Srisawasdi district. Then , take the one-hour ferry ride to the other side of the river before the five-hour journey begins in earnest. The four-kilometer-beach has three distinct areas: Lamai Neu Beach (North Lamai), a fishing village, good for local scenery; Lamai Klang Beach (Middle Lamai), good for swimming and the liveliest spot of all, and Lamai Tai Beach (South Lamai) the rocky location of Hin Ta and Hin Yai (grandfather and grandmother), two phallic-like symbols carved by the forces of nature that have to be seen to be believed.

Taling Ngam Beach: best beach in the west The private beach of Taling Ngam Beach, with its fine, white sand and safe swimming, is considered by many to be the premier beach on Samui’s western coast. Situated 10 km south of Na Thon, this is the location of Le Royal Meridien Baan Taling Ngam a five-star resort that enjoys world acclaim. The beach overlooks the nearby island of Koh Ha and is a great place to watch sunsets.

A tranquil and peaceful location, with added color from local folk’s cottages dotted along the beach, it is quite easy to access other parts of Samui from Taling Ngam Beach via the coast road.

Thong Yang Beach: beach by the ferry Northward from Taling Ngam Beach is Thong Yang Beach, a long beach known for its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, where a few tourists drop by for a swim or just to relax.

The quiet stretch of beach from Taling Ngam Beach to Thong Yang Beach is the site of coconut farms and patches of course, brown sand. The beach is bordered by a headland with a small hill with good views over the small island of Koh Ha. To the rear are a number of reasonably priced resorts. Around the headland lies Li Pa Noi Beach.

The waters here are quite deep and serve as a port, making the ferry at Thong Yang Beach another important center of transportation on Koh Samui with two-hour ferry crossings to Don Leuk, the port of Surat Thani. The ferry is large enough for vehicles.

Mae Nam Beach: north coast beach and port

Mae Nam Beach is a long stretch of coastline on Koh Samui’s northern coast adjacent to Laem Na Phra Lan with a 4-km-long beach that shelves steeply making it suitable as a port. Laem Phra Lan port offers speedboat services mainly to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao to the north.

Mae Nam, with its quiet, spacious beach shaded by pines and coconut trees, and clean, clear waters, is one of the oldest communities on Koh Samui. Tourists visiting here will find some bungalows, resorts and seafood restaurants lining the beach area.

Bo Phut Beach: backpackers’ paradise

The peaceful bay of Bo Phut Beach lies between Mae Nam Beach and Phra Yai Beach on Koh Samui’s northern coast; good for swimming in parts, but also offering port facilities and a stretch of seafood restaurants.

Visitors can get a glimpse of the lifestyle of the local fishing community, while Ao Bo Phut is a jumping-off point for trips to Koh Tao or Ang Thong Marine National Park. During peak travel periods, speedboats leave daily from Bo Phut Beach to Koh Tao.

One of the best areas on Koh Samui for seafood, restaurants in Bo Phut beach area offer tasty dishes at palatable prices; there are also a number of economically priced bungalows that makes this spot a backpackers’ paradise.

Thong Sai Bay: a private beach with a world renowned resort

Not too many beaches have gained popularity through their proximity to first-class accommodation, but at Thong Sai Bay on Koh Samui’s northeastern corner, this is evident at the world-renowned resort of Ban Thong Sai.

Although quite small, Thong Sai beach is one of Ko Samui’s most attractive. Curved, with clean, white sand sandwiched between a deep blue sea and lush vegetation, the Ban Thong Sai beach resort management combines accommodation and service with environmental concern.

Cheung Mon Beach: a bay of peacefulness and tranquility

Also in the northeast of Koh Samui, south from Thon Sai Bay and closer to Samui airport, Cheung Mon Beach is a white sandy bay with an exceptionally beautiful beach in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Far from the local community, Cheung Mon Beach is a curved bay of fine white sand beside a deep blue sea that beckons swimmers. The small island of Koh Fan Noi is a short distance from the beach and can be accessed on foot at low tide. This location is not far from the busier beaches and tourist attractions at Had Chaweng further down the east coast.

Koh Samui (Samui Island )

HISTORY

Ko Samui (Samui Island). This name had been known for a long time among ancient boatmen. Stories of the thousand-year past are told. khwan fa, stone ax used in the past as a device for hunting animals is found ; it is believed that human being lived on Samui Island since the Stone Age. Glong MahoratugSumrid (Mahoratug Sumrid drum), the most important archaecological evidence, was found in 2520 B.E.(1977 A.D.) in the area of Wat Talingpung (Wat Kiriwongkaram), Talingngam District (Today it is Kept at Chaiya National Museum, Surajthani Province). Recently, the kind of drum was found at Moo 6 Marid District (Baan Lamai) in July 2000 and is kept today at Lamai Culturat Hall. These evidences are the best proof that people on Ko Samui had made contact with people outside before the History, Especially trading sea goods and culture.

Glong Mahoratug found is considered to be a part of DongSon culture that has its originality around songma River, Thanhua District located in the North of Vietnam. On the drum, a soul delivering boat is Pictured, The boat is long. Its head and tail are a little curied upward, In the boat, a bird and 5-6 half man half bird creatures that have feather on their heads are decoraed. The kind of boat is believed to make from some kind of glass, the same kind as the first glass boats in Egypt painting. The drum was popular in the South East Asia. It has been found on lands in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos,Burma, and the South islands.

According to the fine Arts Department ’ s discovery of archaeological sea resources in 2527 B.E.(1984 A.D.), archaeologists found that Samui islanders had traded with near and far lands since Ayuttaya Era. This is Beliveved so according to evidences such as “ Rua Samui ” (called after the place it was found), a sampan with flat body and many pottery wares. Sunk under the water about half way between Ko samui and Ko Tan (South of Ko Samui).

Most of the pottery wares found were products of Srisatchanalai and Mai Nam Noi, Singburi Province, The Potter wares are example, tall and short, big and samui earthen jars with 4 holders, cooking pots, jugs, cooking ovens, Sangkalok pordelain, and celadon, Porcelain and celadon made in China, bronze-coated utensils from Ayuttaya Era, and short rounded stone tables were also found. The discovery suggests that this sampan sailed around South East Asia. There is no cvidence to conclude what kind of goods it contained, Even though porcelains were found, they were only a little amount compared to the size of the sampan, However, it is possible the these porcelains were one of the goods. This is similar to the coconuts found; they could be provision or goods (they might float away when the sampan sank.)

It is possible that coconuts might be major good in Samui sampan; this sampan might have stopped at a port on Ko Samui. Moreover, Ko Samui itself has been the land of coconut for a long time. Therefore, it is possible that Samui sampan had sailed from a port north of Thai gulf and stopped at Ko Samui. Then, it headed south to Nakornsrithummarat or Pattalun. However, it sank before completin the trip. The last Trip of the sampan could have been around 23rd to the beginning of 24 th Buddhist Century, which was Around the end of Ayuttaya Era.

Despite its popularity, Koh Samui remains one of the country’s more beautiful island destinations.

Popular Resort Areas

Originally settled by Hainanese from China in the mid-19th century, well-developed Koh Samui has a rather different culture to other parts of Thailand. The descendants of those pioneers now live mainly in the villages, as outsiders populate most tourist-oriented resorts. Known as Chao Samui (Samui folk), many of them still do the trade of their forebears - coconut farming. Indeed, the island is covered with palms, and coconut is a common ingredient of many local dishes.

Beaches & Nightlife

Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai are Samui’s most beautiful and most popular beaches. Both have a huge selection of places to stay, and prices rise from December to July. The nightlife of each is different: Chaweng is better for couples, women and families, while single men predominate amidst the beer bar culture of Lamai. These resorts, as well as Na Thon (Samui’s main town), have communications, exchange and car/motorcycle hire facilities.

Temple Visits

Nice temples to visit are Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) in the north, with its 12-meter Buddha statue, and Wat Laem Saw in the south, with its old and sacred stupa. Monks conduct meditation courses for foreigners at Wat Pang Ba, near Hat Chaweng.

Sports

Buffalo fighting is a famous spectator sport on Samui. Duels between bulls last just a few seconds: the first to run loses, and injuries are rare. Seven bullrings around the island take turn to host competitions. For keen fight fans, human combatants box in regular matches at Muay Thai rings in Chaweng and Na Thon. Divers will find no end of operators around Samui, but most of them are at Hat Chaweng.

Beaches in Samui

Waterfalls in Samui

Koh Tarutao (Tarutao Island )

Tarutao is the first marine park of Thailand. Seven large islands are Ko Tarutao , Ko Adang, Ko Rawi, Ko Li Pe , Ko Klang, Ko Ba Tuang, and Ko Bit Si. Tarutao was proclaimed a National Park on 19 April 1974 and declared by UNESCO as an ASEAN Heritage Park and Reserve in 1982. Located next to Koh Tao is Koh Nang Yuan, the smaller of the three islands. While its dimensions may be less, its views certainly are not.

These islands are located in Amphoe Koh Pha-ngan in the Surat Thani Province. The majority of the area is mountainous, with the hills gently sloping into the beaches. While the island is only 3.4 by 7.6 kilometers large, the coral reef stretches for eight kilometers in front.

Highlights
Despite the small size, this peanut shaped island has eleven bays and ten peninsulas. The total length of the coastline is twenty-nine kilometers. Each beach has ample accommodations for thevisitor. Among the more popular beaches are:

Had Mae Had
which is the commercial center of the island, Had Chalok Ban Kao, which is a viewpoint on the hill, Ao Thian Oft with its clean water and picturesque views, Had Sai Daeng, which in addition to its unique red-sand beaches also has excellent diving amongst the sharks, Ao Tanod where the dive school is located, and Had Sai Ri where you can enjoy the long gardens that outline the equally long beach.

Had Sairee
Sairee's white sandy beach stretches about 1.7km over most of the west coast, interrupted only by a few huge boulders. Mae Haad is only a 10 minute walk away. Being the most popular area on Tao, Sairee offers a wide range of accommodation, dive centers, restaurants, shops, beach bars, travel & email services, nurseries, etc. Here, you can have the best view on Koh Nang Yuan island. A cluster of rocks called Suan Hin Jor Por Ror highlights King Rama V's inscription that he made on his visit in 1899. You will also find the Fishery Museum, and on the way to Mae Haad the police station, the public school and the local Buddhist temple.

CHALOK BAAN KAO

Third largest beach, located on the southern coast facing Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. This bay is smaller than Sairee, but offers a similar range of accommodation, eateries and nightlife. The Last Paradise, a helicopter pad, offers a spectacular view of the bay and the surrounding beaches. Partytime is on Sat's. Chalok Baan Kao is beautifully framed by Taa Toh Lagoon to the east and Saan Jao Beach to the west. It also connects to Thian Og Bay and Sai Daeng Beach. The rock formation at cape Taa Toh resembles a sitting Buddha, this is best to be seen from the viewpoint opposite (Buddha Rock).

Hin Wong Bay

North-east coast; this bay is abundant with intact coral reefs. Four small hillside resorts and one diving school (Hin Wong Divers). There is currently one or two resorts in Hin Wong Bay and a couple of restaurants, so it is a great spot for weary travelers wishing to get away from it all.Hin Wong Bay also offers great snorkelling. The sheltered bay is teeming with marine life in many colours and sizes.

Aow Leuk

Also known as Deep Water Bay, Aow Leuk is a top spot for snorkelling. The bay is surrounded by steep hills and is only accessible by boat or by a small path from Rocky Bay. Nevertheless it is well visited by travellers who know a quality beach when they see one. The beach itself is around 200 meters long and absolutely crispy white. There is one resort in Aow Leuk with offers very basic accommodation and one restaurant.

Haad Sai Daeng Beach

Really part of Rocky Bay, Haad Sai Daeng is a beautiful little cove on the southern tip of Koh Tao. Haad Sai Daeng Resort offers bungalows and a nice restaurant for guests.

Jansom Bay

Jansom Bay is a small protected cove offering it's visitors a great place to relax and snorkel. It's especially good for kids because there is no currents and the water is clear and quite shallow. There is a wealth of marine life including many colorful reef fish. There is also a good chance of spotting a Green Sea Turtle.

Laem Thian

Laem Thian is known as Swimthrough City among local scuba divers. The reason for that is the many caverns, tunnels and swim throughs you'll find just beneath the waters surface. It's a great place to snorkel and one of the only places on the island you'll find the strange looking Unicorn Fish.

Lighthouse Bay

Lighthouse Bay sports Koh Tao's only snorkel and diveable wreck. It's the wreck of a small wooden fishing boat, roughly 15 meters long, which sank in September 2000.Lighthouse Bay is uninhabited and there is no access from land, so renting a long tail boat or a sea kayak is the only way of getting there.

Mango Bay

Named for all the mango trees that grow on it's steep hills, Mango Bay is a favorite spot for day trippers from Koh Samui. It's a crescent shaped bay with a small coral beach and great snorkelling only 20 meter off shore. Mango Bay is uninhabited since it is only accessible by boat. A beautiful spot and a must if you are visiting Koh Tao.

Rocky Bay

Famous for its Blacktip Reef Shark population, Rocky Bay is also a beautiful little beach on which to spend a lazy afternoon sunbathing. There is only one resort in Rocky Bay, namely Rocky Bay Resort which offer a variety of sizes of bungalows.

Sai Tong Beach is a secluded little beach on the southern side of Koh Tao. Only a few bungalows are scattered in the vicinity off the beach making ir a perfect spot for anybody wishing a bit of privacy.

Tanote Bay

To get to Tanote Bay is a thrilling experience. The road there will take you over 'Mount Koh Tao' and offers a breathtaking view of the island's eastern hilly slopes.

Diving: The coral reef offshore is a perfect place for both snorkeling and scuba diving. On the island, there is a diving school, which attracts novices from all over the world because of their competence and low prices.

Views: There are many places on the island, like the John-Suwan and Sai Ri viewpoints, where you can see nature at its finest.

Koh Nang Yuan: Koh Nang Yuan is close to Koh Tao, but smaller in size. It consists of three separate islands all connected by a shallow sandbank.

Ko Muk and Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave)

Not just another interesting attraction, Ko Muk is the most outstanding attraction in the Trang Sea and an ideal destination for tourists enthralled with nature. The trip takes 1.30 hours.

Koh Phi Phi Lay

Phi Phi island

Koh Phi Phi Lay is an island of 6.6 sq.kms. It is mountainous and rocky. Tall cliffs rise straight up from the sea's surface almost all around the island. Water depth averages 20 metres offshore; and 34 metres is the deepest spot, at the south end of the island. The semi-circular bays are very lovely and include: Pilae, Maya, Losama, and others. On the northeast is the famous 'Viking Cave' so-called from the paintings therein, which His Majesty King Bhumibol was pleased to grant also the name 'Payanak' meaning 'Serpent Lord', in honour of the villagers who gather swallow's nests on the island. Inside, on the east and south walls of the cave, are paintings from historical times of an elephant, and boats of various kinds: Arab prows, junks, sharp- stemmed vessels probably of European origin, steam ships, and propeller-driven sailboats. It is theorized that these are the work of sailors, or perhaps even of pirates, because the island provides refuge during the monsoons and lies on the main shipping lane from west to east. It was thus a place suitable for offloading cargo and conducting repairs.

Getting to Ko Phi Phi
Phi Phi Islands which are equidistant to Phuket and Krabi Provinces can be reached by boat.

From Krabi
Chao Fa Pier: Passenger boats leave Chao Fa Pier twice daily at 10 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. The trip takes about 2.30 hours.

Ao Nang: There is one express boat trip leaving daily at 9 p.m. taking 40 min.

From Phuket
Many tour companies in Phuket organize one-day trips to Phi Phi Islands. The shoreline of each islands are of inconsistent curves since they are situated in the outer part of the sea and are worn away directly by waves. Part of the water lies in the Andaman Sea and eastern side of the Indian Ocean while the shoulder of the continent borders the western shoreline of Phang Nga province and Union of Myanmar, paralleling the Nikobar Islands of India. There is no mud at all along the beaches, so the sands are very clean, white and very fine. Some islands do have hills in the area, which are usually quite tall with the highest top of 244 meters above mean sea level, while some islands are of flat area surrounded by sand dunes and coral reefs.
Ko Similan lies a complex ecosystem commonly called the rainforest of the sea, the coral reef. The major residents of the reef are coral and the closely related sea anemones of the Phylum Cnidaria, Class Anthozoa, which contains all radially symmetrical invertebrate animals. Corals and sea anemones exist as individual polyps living in either solitary or mostly colonial forms.
The polyps of hard corals construct communal limestone homes which are built up into a multitude of shapes and sizes eventually giving rise to a coral reef. Soft corals have soft bodies made of large numbers of identical polyps connected by fleshy tissue (Zooxanthallae). These soft corals contain small algae within their tissues which are able to convert the sun's energy into food.
This cooperative relationship is known as symbiosis and also exists in hard corals, clams and other marine organisms. There are several factors that support good environment for the reef i.e. temperature, salinity, light, wave and tide, sedimentation and nutrient. Therefore, healthy coral reef can be found easily in the Andaman Sea comparing to the Gulf of Thailand. In Andaman Sea, coral reefs are able to classified as deep water and medium water. For the deep water coral reef grow down to 30 m. Of course, in this case water allows enough light for the algae. This reef type is mostly found in Similan and Surin islands. For the rest area, medium water coral reef grow between 8-15 m beneath the surface.Coral can also be classified to fall into these structural categories: massive, columnar, encrusting, branching, foliceaous, laminar and free-living coral. The hard corals found in Mu Ko Similian National Park are deep water species of mostly staghorn coral types (Acropora echinata) and the smaller cauliflower shaped types (Seriatopora histrix). Many other species of marine life co-exist within the coral reef: Gorgonian sea fans, flower-like soft coral, several species of crabs, spiny painted lobsters, squid, sponges, sea cucumbers and giant clams.

Highlight of Ko Similan
The best beautiful sandy beaches of Thailand , Beautiful coral reefs , Best dive site for Scuba Diving.

Getting to
By Car
10 hours by bus from Bangkok 's Southern Bus Terminal to Ampher ThabLaMu, ( Thap-la-mu Pier ) From Thap Lamu Port to Ko Similan, you can take a private tour boat which controlled by the national park and serves tourists everyday. The island has no sand beach but consists of rock beaches all over. At the front beach, all the rocks are rounds and about the same size. When sea water surges ashore, the wet rocks will reflect the sunlight, making the beaches glittering. Those rocks are black grey. They form pointed paths protruding the emerald sea water. When the tide recedes, those rock beaches will be wider.

Ko Hin-gnam is not far from Adang, only less half an hour by boat. The island is surrounded by corral reefs. A punt is needed to get close to those corral reefs. Once getting near, a person will witness a wonder of nature with his or her own eyes. It’s indescribable; the beholder will testify that Hin-ganm is…“gnam” (beautiful) as its name implies.

Apart from coral reels and fancy fish which are abundant around the island, there is another astounding feature: the shimmering sound coming from beneath the water. This pleasant sound is generated by the rocks that hitting one another when pushed by the waves.

From the bird’s-eye view, one will see strips of black rocks mingled with white corral reefs. Mass of rocks can also be seen clearly under the sea water. Those rocks are the creation of strong sea currents…presenting a marvel of Satun’s sea.

Will Hin-gnam retain its natural beauty for the Thai posterity? The answer rests upon the awareness of every one. Even though there are millions of rocks on the island, they are likely to disappear. Each year the island is visited by many tens thousand tourists.. If each one of them takes three rocks away as the souvenir, those “Hin-gnam” or “beautiful rocks” will not be with us in less than ten years.

If those rocks were alive, each one of them would surely want to decorate Satun’s sea rather than parting from their friends and becoming a personal belonging or a souvenir displayed in the city dweller’s showcase.

Phuket

Thailand's only island province, Phuket is a world famous tourist destination, renowed for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, lots of offshore islands providing great sites for diving, as well as plentiful high quality resort accommodation.

Formerly its great wealth came from tin mining, and the influence of the Chinese tin and rubber entrepreneurs is evident ,especially in the town, where numerous Chinese temples and shrines celebrate a Vegetarian Food Festival every October.

Today the province's wealth comes from the vast tourism industry that has developed in recent years, as travellers around the world discover Phuket hasa lot to offer in the way of sun and sea.
